Bootylicious Horse Fly

Bootylicious Horse Fly

Bootylicious Horse FlyIf you like this story, then you better put a ring on it.  That’s not unlike what some scientists over in Australia did recently.  Picture a horse fly that has been captured over 30 years ago in 1981 in Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands in Australia.  See the image.  Notice that it looks a little, shall we say, “more significant in the rear” than the rest of its body.  That is what they were thinking in the land down under.  So significant was this feature, that the scientist, Bryan Lessard, thought it best fitting to attach a bootylicious moniker to the flying creature.  Beyoncé the horse fly had a title.

Of course, the horse fly is not called Beyoncé.  No, in fact there is still some semblance of scientific illustration with the necessary, typical Latin words attached.  The official name is Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae with the singer’s attachment at the rear of the insect’s title.  Get it?  Also, it should be noted that 1981 is the year Beyoncé was born.  This is an impassible occurrence.

Congratulations must go out to Beyoncé on her entry into the world of obscure animal kingdom names.  Also, a big “well done” must be forwarded to Mr. Lessard in his decision to name a long since captured insect after one of today’s pop legends.  If you may be wondering if the naming after a celebrity is a bad idea, I pose only this question – what is the name of the last newly named insect?  This one made headlines.  Good work there.
